"I Don't Want to Exist" is a vocal past American vocaliser-songwriter Gavin DeGraw from his 2003 debut album, Chariot. The song gained exposure later being featured as the opening theme to The CW teen drama series I Tree Hill, and it was released as a radio single on February 17, 2004. It peaked at number 10 in the U.s. in 2005 and became a top-20 hit in Commonwealth of australia, holland, Norway, and Sweden.

The song is certified gold in the United states of america, having sold over 500,000 downloads. In 2012, the vocal reached number 27 on the Great britain Singles Chart, its highest position, due to the finale of One Tree Colina 's ninth and final flavour airing, which too featured DeGraw.[ citation needed ] The song'due south music video follows the bulletin of the lyrics, featuring a girl investigating her loftier school peers while they are frozen in time, and she eventually decides to be herself.[one]

Gavin DeGraw wrote the song as a message to adolescents, encouraging them to be themselves and to not let outside factors change their personalities. DeGraw explained:

["I Don't Want to Be"] was heavily influenced by the identity crisis correct now that exists amongst youth. It'south almost similar you can go into any town in the state and the kids don't necessarily take an identity of their ain; it's similar whatever is on television is who they are.[ane]

  • The song is the opening theme to One Tree Hill.[37] DeGraw performed the song on a season 1 episode of One Tree Colina. He returned for the flavor five finale to perform the song with Jackson Brundage. In the eighth season, several artists covered information technology for the season'due south theme music, including Spinnerette, Grace Potter, Confronting Me!, Kate Voegele, Tegan and Sara, Susie Suh and Patrick Stump. DeGraw also performed the song for the series finale to gloat their 10th anniversary of Tric.
  • The song appears in the game Karaoke Revolution Party and is available every bit part of the downloadable content in the game Karaoke Revolution: American Idol Encore.
